The Midnight Kollel refers to a group of Torah scholars who dedicate themselves to study during the most auspicious hours of the night—after midnight. According to the Holy Zohar, these hours are exalted above all others. Below are several references from the Zohar regarding the significance of learning Torah at this time, illustrating the unique merit of supporting Torah scholars who learn during these sacred hours:

The Zohar on the Unique Merit of Night Study:

"It has been clarified that the Holy One, blessed be He, and all the Tzadikim in the Garden of Eden listen attentively to their voice, and a thread of kindness is drawn upon them by day, as it is written: 'By day Hashem commands His kindness, and by night, His song is with me.'" (Zohar, Parashat Lech Lecha, 92a)

Explanation: One who studies Torah at night, especially after midnight, merits that a special thread of kindness will be drawn upon him during the day.

The study after midnight is during a time of complete mercy, without any mixture of judgment. The influence of this study extends upon those who engage in it, making it a uniquely elevated time during which souls and higher worlds receive greater spiritual illumination. Therefore, those who support Torah scholars studying at night merit reciprocal blessings of mercy for themselves and their loved ones, in addition to bringing great spiritual joy to the soul of the deceased in whose honor the study is dedicated.

Testimony of Rabbi Abba on Midnight Study:

Rabbi Elazar and Rabbi Abba entered the house. When the night was divided at midnight, they arose to engage in Torah study. Rabbi Abba said, "Now is certainly a time of favor before the Holy One, blessed be He, and we have often pointed out that at midnight, the Holy One enters among the Tzadikim in the Garden of Eden and delights with them. Fortunate is he who engages in Torah at that time."
(Zohar, Parashat Terumah, 173b)

The Zohar describes how, at night, when the world is quiet from its pursuits and desires, the souls of the righteous ascend, and those who engage in Torah study during these hours connect to a supreme Divine light. Just as the Tzadikim in the higher worlds merit a special closeness to the Creator called "delight" (a level higher than mere "pleasure"), so too do the Torah scholars in the Midnight Kollel receive elevated influences and connect to the Tzadikim in the upper realms. As it is written: "The remnant of the house of Judah that remains shall take root downward and bear fruit upward" (Isaiah 37:31).

Thus, those who support Torah scholars learning at night become partners in sublime unifications, creating a significant elevation for the soul of the deceased for whom the study is dedicated. Undoubtedly, the merit of the righteous in the Garden of Eden will stand in their favor and for their loved ones.

Our sages teach us the concept of "Ner Le'echad Ner Leme'ah"—one candle can light a hundred others without diminishing its own flame. Similarly, supporting Torah study, which is called "light," spreads spiritual illumination to the entire world. In this case, it’s important to understand that no one loses—neither the donor, nor the soul of the deceased, nor the scholar who benefits from the donation. Instead, it creates both unity and true partnership.

The donor, by supporting Torah study, becomes a partner in the study itself. Moreover, the donor can personally enhance this light by rising at midnight for Tikkun Chatzot and learning Torah after midnight, thereby meriting manifold blessings from Heaven.

At this point, it is fitting to cite the words of our teacher Rabbi Chaim Vital, disciple of the Ari Z”l, regarding the merit of rising at midnight:
"Rising after midnight, besides being part of mourning for Zion and Jerusalem, as it says (Isaiah 66:10), 'Rejoice with her, all who mourn for her,' is also the time when the Holy One, blessed be He, mourns and roars like a lion. Additionally, engaging in Torah at that time brings a unique merit. Our sages said (Shir HaShirim Rabbah 5:7), 'The song of Torah is only at night.' They also said (Avodah Zarah 3b), 'Whoever engages in Torah study at night is surrounded by a thread of kindness during the day.' Moreover, they said (Tamid 32b), 'Whoever studies Torah at night, the Shechinah is opposite him.' As it is written (Lamentations 2:19), 'Arise, cry out in the night.' King David merited eternal life in both this world and the next only because of this practice, as it says (Psalms 119:62), 'At midnight, I rise to give thanks to You.' The Zohar extensively praises this practice, stating that it brings the Holy Spirit upon a person (Zohar, Parashat Shemot 18b)."

Yes, 100% of your donation goes directly toward supporting the Kollel of Torah scholars, specifically the Midnight Kollel of Beit HaZohar Matok Midvash. Your donation is used to cover the ongoing operational expenses, without which we would be unable to continue paying the scholars month after month.

It’s important to note that our Kollelim receive no government funding—all of our expenses are covered solely by the holy donations of Am Yisrael, for the sake of Am Yisrael.
